Tile and grout are not what keeps water out of your wall. The assembly behind them is. When a shower fails, it almost never fails at the tile, it fails at a corner, a drain connection or a pan that was never built to hold water in the first place.
That is the part of the job nobody sees and the part that decides whether the shower lasts. We build the waterproofing before we set a single tile, and only then start on the surface you will actually look at.
What the work covers
Every shower is different, but the sequence rarely changes.
Removing the old surround and pan, then checking the framing and substrate for the rot and movement that usually caused the failure.
Building the pan to slope correctly to the drain, so water leaves instead of standing at the low corner.
Sealing the substrate, corners and penetrations so the wall behind the tile stays dry.
Lowering the entry for a flush transition, and adding grab bars or a bench where the layout calls for it.
Recessed shelves and seats framed and waterproofed as part of the wall rather than added on afterward.
Setting wall and floor tile, including large format and pebble, then grouting and sealing, with the opening prepped for glass.
