Framing is the last stage where a mistake is cheap. A wall that is out of plumb by a quarter inch is nothing while it is open studs, and it becomes a tapered gap above the cabinets, a door that will not stay closed, and a tile course that runs uphill once the finishes are on.
So we frame to a line rather than to what is already there. Existing construction is rarely square, and part of the job is deciding what to correct and what to work around before the drywall goes up and hides the decision.
